James 4:3, Romans 8:26-27, John 14:13-14, and 2 Corinthians 4:7-11

Two Key Spiritual Areas:

  1.   IN
  • The Holy Spirit intercedes for us with groanings too deep for   (Romans 8:26).
  • The Holy Spirit Himself intercedes for the saints according to the   of God (Romans 8:25).
  • The Word and Truth are not some cool concepts nor positive ideals but the very   of Christ Himself (John 1:1, 14:6).
  • Don't worry about the   before you but rejoice IN the POWER of God Who is IN you.
  1.   IN
  • Everyone who has been 1)   of God overcomes the world.  The victory that has overcome the world is our 2)  .  The person that overcomes the world is the one who 3)   that Jesus is the Son of God (1 John 5:4-5 [typo in bulletin notes]).
  • We have this   in jars of clay to show that the surpassing   belongs to God and not to us (2 Corinthians 4:7).
  • In the world we will have adversities, but in the joy of the Lord will have   IN Jesus.

Small Group Questions

  1. What is the difference between the power OF prayer and the power IN prayer? ("power OF prayer" = "my will be done"; "power IN prayer" = Your (God's) will be done)
  2. Read James 4:3.  What is a reason that James gave his readers for their prayers not yielding the results they were looking for?  In what way were they "asking wrongly?"
  3. What are some examples of how we pray or "ask wrongly," looking to fulfill our own passions & desires?
  4. How do you feel when you are not sure whether your prayers are God-honoring or not?
  5. Read Romans 8:26-27.  How does the Holy Spirit help us when we do not know how to pray, especially when we have the tendency to pray out of our own interests and desires?
  6. How do you feel about the Holy Spirit's role of intercession in your own life, knowing He goes between you and the Father on your behalf, in accordance with His will?
  7. Read 1 John 5:4-5.  Often in Scripture, "the world" refers to the part of humankind that perpetuates and promotes the fulfillment of our fleshly, carnal desires and interests apart from the interests and will of God.  What does this passage say about the one who "overcomes the world?"
  8. How can this passage encourage us as Christ-followers who may sometimes stumble in our spiritual journey?
  9. Read 2 Corinthians 4:7-8.  The "treasure" referred to here is the light of Christ and the gift of knowing God through Jesus.  How does this passage encourage you, who may be weary of striving for perfection or doing good things or enduring hardship or persecution in your spiritual journey?
  10. What is one practical way you can "rejoice in the power of God Who is IN you" this week?  (e.g. Post-It note on your bathroom mirror, social media post, starting every prayer this week with thanking God for being our power in prayer, etc.)
  11. How can you encourage someone this week who may need a reminder of the victory we have in Christ?
  12. Close in prayer.
